father of a murdered navy seal by the botched benghazi response. >> i couldn't understand why did they allow them to die. why didn't they send help? >> he wants answers. you can imagine why. more from that powerful interview. "fox & friends" begins right n now. ♪ >> all right. that fox news alert. get used to it. we will have a lot of them this morning. >> a busy morning. >> alisyn: extremely busy and peter doocy in for dave briggs on assignment. and a tsunami warning after an earthquake off the coast of canada. the waves were coming in, smaller than expected. tweets from viewers in hawaii saw some storm surge and dropped a little bit.

it doesn't mean that they're out of the woods. tourists are evacuated from the lower levels of the hotel. a warning issued after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook the west coast of canada and a tsunami advisory in place for northern california and southern oregon as well. so for more on this, let's turn to kho, and who is live on the beach this morning, with more. how does it look this morning, tammy? >> well, so far, so good. and as we mentioned before the waves weren't as big as expected. and it's populated at 1.9 feet and came into the copper who are bore in maui. >> so, sandy was not expected three to fix feet. alarming or the residents and

g geologists and it was only 1.5, does that mean we're in the clear or another wave could roll in. >> first gave at 12:30 and they're monitoring it. and the experts said the first dozen waves are the ones they're usually concerned about, the trends in the past in hawaii and the first dozen waves have already passed and they still haven't seen anything bigger than 1.9 feet that i had mentioned, but they are still watching very closely because they said with the islands, the waves can bounce off of each other and bigger waves as well and they're worried about the wrap around currents and a couple of hours before the tsunami warning is canceled. >> not only was there a 7.7 magnitude quake, but 5.8 after shock after that as well. and all right. tammy, thank you for joining us from hawaii with the latest. rick reichmuth thought he was just going to bebout

the big storm bearing down on the east coast, sandy, now, rick, we've got a tsunami. >> rick: to be honest with you when you see the waves starting to come in at a foot, foot and a half it's not that alarming, could have been worse with that kind of an earthquake up there, because it's a place where we don't see a lot of them. don't have a precedent what to expect from those kind of things. it could have been worse, if you see a number of waves coming in around the foot, foot and a half range, i think they're breathe ago sigh of relief. that's good news. we're really going to kind of transition and focus so much energy to this major storm and i may major storms and a lot of people are saying, what are you talking about, it's a storm affecting the northeast. take a look at the map, from michigan down to mississippi the eastern half of the country is going to be dealing with some sort of impacts from the storm the next few days, a lot of people with power outages and we mentioned power

outages down across parts of tennessee and kentucky and michigan and the winds are so extreme for so many people and this is the latest look at the storm, at least what you can see from the radar, radar doesn't go out that far, but we've got the radar that we're seeing very heavy already four to five inches across parts of the north carolina and the beach is taking a beating here and the track continues to do something interesting to the storm and i want to show you the temperatures so i can help explain what's happening. a there's a major cold front slicing there, two waves, or a couple-- a few ways that the storms can be forming. typically forming because of warm water and going through a transition and it's not the warm water that's going to make it strengthen, it's a contrast between the warm air here and the very warm storm, contrasting with the cold front there, and that's going to cause the storm to explode of the it's going to be strengthening as it makes that, bad news, a storm most

of us here have never experienced anything like this, part of that means a lot of us don't really know exactly what some impacts are going to be, we have to go on our understanding of what a storm of this pressure will do and that's what we're basing this on. not a lot of us, pretty much nobody is working in this industry at this point has dealt with a storm of this magnitude and coming toward the new york city area and the population zone, long island, north jersey, new york city, connecticut coast line, all of this is kind of a worse case scenario and we always talk about what is a worse case scenario for an area, new orleans, what angle a hurricane could potentially impact new orleans, this is the single of a storm that's worrisome to new york, if you're on the right side of wherever the storm comes in, that's where the storm surge is and exactly where new york city is and where long island is and because of the shape of that coast line, water is going to pile in there and can't get out and funnel water

down long island sound and that meets up on the east river. on the east side of new york city and go up there and not going to have a way to escape. we're thinking storm surges probably like we never experienced here and such strong winds that the waves will likely be 20 to 25 feet high on top of about an 8 foot storm surge and that means a lot of the beaches in long island, potentially along the areas of manhattan and beaches in north jersey taking a pounding. and this is just that storm surge area though, everybody is going to be getting the rain and everybody is going to be getting the wind that's going to cause widespread power outages and going to last for many, many days. >> and rick, some spots in west virginia could wind up with two feet of snow. >> more than two feet. probably spots for four, five feet of snow. >> alisyn: wow. >> clayton: they're working feverishly to get down the branches, one branch to flock

down the power line. >> and why aren't all power lines buried again? if they wanted shovel ready. >> alisyn: and why do we have trees? >> get rid of trees. >> alisyn: and go right to your headlines, we have a lot to tell you about. there's going to be more violence in the middle east, at least 40 dead and dozens wounded after insurgents unleashed bombings and house raids yesterday. the attacks of shiite muslims and came in the the middle of a four-day holiday. and despite the iraqi police. police in san diego got more than they bargained for. nine military grade weapons inside the trunk after 20-year-old car, including a sniper rifle and two assault rifles. the police were cracking down on teenagers buying booze when david robert morris iii popped open his trunk exposing the weapons. the san diego state university student also had a military

knife and he was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving and may also face some weapons charges. no word yet what he was doing with all of those weapons. well, a day of campaigning with mitt romney was cut short after the his oldest daughter was injured in an accident. and amanda rubio's golf cart crashed, and she is he' now in fair condition. >> she's doing better, and talking and the whole family is next to her, and we hope that everything is going to be much better tomorrow. >> alisyn: his daughter is 12 years old. i may have said 24. but the rubio family say that senator and mrs. rubio are grateful for all the outpouring of support and prayers.

so, is this the president, you know, trying -- sort of dodging the question or is he trying to give a more measured response and not a misleading response the as they did the first time around. >> unfortunately appears to be dodging the question because there's already a mountain of evidence that came from the drone, e-mails that came in started at 4:05. seven hours they watched at americans died and did nothing. of course, this is rell rant to who should be commander-in-chief and not only this time around, but this failure disqualifies hillary clinton from being a future commander-in-chief. as she says the buck also stops with her and clearly, she is not qualified to be president of the united states if she watched these people die. >> alisyn: brian, why haven't we been able to get more straight forward answers from the administration? >> we're waiting, i believe you said it right, a measured response, the republican house is doing an investigation, let's be fair and give it

her dance studio as a front for prostitution. 39 people have been identified so far. and look out from zombies to zumba, the zombies are coming. the city of san diego has recruited the undead to test its counterterrorism response. they'll be invading the streets on halloween so police and first responders could practice on those people. all right? ali over to you. >> alisyn: that's kind of scary. the latest gdp report shows only 2% growth and with the unemployment rate at 7.8%, is this the economic recovery that president obama had promised? we're back now with our political panel to take a closer look at some of the numbers. 2.0% gdp growth and better than expected. >> it's very poor. over the last 115 year the average has been 3.25% and low in comparison and don't be bamboozled by the number.

in fact, it was fueled by enormous federal government spending. the president is literally shovelling the money out of the white house. private sector growth was 1.3%, a minuscule 1.3%, and the money that the federal government spent, some of it was defense, but a lot of it went for very preposterous wasteful things like community transformation grants, to organizations in south l.a. that do one-on-one street education, or 1.3 billion dollars to insurance co-opes that have a 35 to 40% expected default rate. >> alisyn: got it. >> so this is wasteful money to create new jobs before the election. >> alisyn: is this the kind of growth we're looking for, brian. >> no, but it's moving in the right direction and that's what the the american people are feeling and seeing in the numbers and let's remember, included in this was an 80 billion dollar bailout of the auto industry, which president obama pushed, which has helped with 1.5 million jobs in ohio and michigan.

so let's be clear when we talk about government bailouts and spending, a lot of the spending is help to rejigger our economy with which by the way, mitt romney in the debate said he's for government guarantees and-- >> we're talking about the performance this quarter and it's terrible. >> we're talking about the fact that the the president saved frus depression and people don't want to talk about this, and no one wants to say-- >> and years ago-- >> and guess what? the concept of revisionist history especially a question about fiat thinking of moving the production of jeep vehicles to china. when you see that, what you want to talk about jobs saved and ask people at delphi about their pensions. the real conversations does it move the needle to obama in any way shape or form positive. no, the gallup poll 41 and all for romney, and nobody trusts

president obama on the economy. >> ohio and-- >> and investors don't trust him, because-- investors don't trust him he's already told businesses the tax rates are going to go up, especially on small businesses and secondly, obamacare, the single largest mandated labor cost hike in american history is about to clobber. >> unemployment is the best in years and-- >> the unemployment is the best it's been in years. >> down to 7.8%. >> that doesn't mean more people are working. >> and the numbers have shown the economy is getting better. >> the american people are more than the people you live with and hang out in your house. 7.8% is not real when it's 14.7%. and americans are working two and three jobs. americans are still looking for some kind of recovery and they're not with barack obama to get that recovery. >> the jobs that barack obama put forward and the

ichltd. >> clayton: if you're just waking up on this sunday morning, a fox news alert. >> hawaii is still under a tsunami warning as they wait and watch to see if major waves are coming ashore. >> clayton: the first waves coming ashore less than an hour ago. much smaller than expected, but the danger remains there, residents are urged to seek higher ground and hotels are evacuating guests staying on the first floor. the tsunami warning issued after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook the west coast of canada. and a tsunami advisory for northern california and southern oregon. we'll keep an eye on that.

while iowa waits for the waves, the east coast is bracing for a monster storm. rick reichmuth has the latest. >> rick: also on the hawaii waves, they've had four waves that come in, there won't be larger waves coming in behind that, so the waves they've had, if they have a fewdy asianal waves could go on for another for an hour, hour and a half. there won't be larger than what they've had. they're handling it and maybe just another hour or so. meanwhile for us, guys, a really significant storm on our doorstep here across parts of the northeast. a kind of storm we've never had here. we've had nor'easter all the time and this will be a nor'easter, and typically thing it's snow, but show you west virginia, it's a rain and snow he event that we've never seen. steve, you've talked about the perfect storm in 1991. it was centered up here across

the areas far out of maine and massachusetts and the pressure in that storm got down to 972 millibars. it doesn't mean that much to you, but say average we're at about 1,014 millibars, something like this. a hurricane category 4 or 5 is down to around 920 millibars, this storm is forecast to be at about 938, 940 millibars, an incredibly strong storm that we're talking about and it's going to be centered right here much more in this population zone than happened across long island down towards philadelphia and baltimore and d.c., so, major impacts here. we're already seeing the rain moving just to the west of philadelphia. philadelphia starts to see some rain shortly here and this is about 36 hours away from the bad stuff that we'll start to get there. so it's a long duration event for so many people across this area.

and that's the rain and there's a windy side. i want to show you this, the winds and color you see are somehow associated with something happening with sandy. this is 30 mile per hour wind guests and some of those are in excess of 100 miles per hour. move forward in time. by the time we get to 24 hours from now, midnight to 3 in the morning. the 50 mile per hour winds are across coastal areas of massachusetts, connecticut, new york, new jersey, still going on down in the carolinas and all day long it's with us and the storm continues to pull in shore. i want to point this out. 50 or 60 mile per hour gusts across parts of michigan and that's going to be wind kohling out of the north and driving cold air down here and why there will be one side of this that's talking about snow. going to tuesday, 3 a.m., that's as far out as this model goes, it's going to be the same story for wednesday and we still have winds across parts of georgia into florida

that are 30 miles per hour, it's a very long duration event for the eastern third of the country and that's what the big problem is. the center of the storm, only matters for storm surge and that's what's going to be going on across parts of new york, new jersey, towards areas of long island as well and the last thing, steve you talked about it, this is the bulls eye of snow right there, some of the spots southwestern pennsylvania, northern parts of western virginia, maybe four to five feet of snow by the time it's done. >> steve: this could be a storm we'll talk about for the rest of our lives. >> thanks, rick. >> alisyn: the rest of your headlines. overnight at least three people were killed when a homicide bomber attacked a catholic church in northern nigeria. the attacker tried to drive a car packed with explosives inside the church while masses was going on. no one claimed responsibility, but it happened where the religious fighting between

christians and muslims killed hundreds in recent years. and joe biden with another gaffe, and the name of a democratic candidate in the key swing state of virginia. >> i want to tell you it's good to be in a state that's going to be represented by tim kaine. i'm a big tom cain fan. a big tom cane fan. >> he got it right in the first time and former governor tim kaine not tom cain is running and the hadded line, the candidate was not bothered by the mistake, tim kaine took to switter and thanked the vice-president for the shoutout saying i love jay biden. and if you want florida university, you might want to choose english, schools give a break to students who major in math and science and those are

of course, our ambassador, a member of the embassy staff and two former navy seals were killed. jennifer griffin had a big scoop on friday where she, her sources told her that security officers working for the cia heard the gunshots about a mile away and wanted to go help the ambassador and everybody else, and they were told to stand down three times. well, the father of one of the navy seals who died, charles wood, he wants to know who made the decision not to save my son and made that plea again last night on judanine's show. >> i couldn't understand why they allowed them to die, why they didn't send help. i don't know anything about tactical weapons or anything like that, i know that they couldn't sent something i'm told would have been a c-130 that within 45 minutes could have secured the-- >> out of italy, across the

mediterranean. >> wherever, and not only protected the lives of 30 people, but also the lives of the individuals that were also heroes besides my son, who sacrificed their life. this was not necessary. i knew this could have happened and my question in washington d.c. was why didn't this happen. >> clayton: and the question of course, we were asking on the show and continued tot the secretary of defense leon panetta said, the zone seemed too hot to send in additional forces and we were monitoring the situation, when there's others who say it wasn't hot and allowing a helicopter gun ship laser locked on the targets and could have intervened and stopped this brutal slaying unfolding. >> apparently a guy on the embassy roof who had a laser pointer painting where the mortars were coming from on the radio begging please, just send us a gun ship, it never came. >> and it's inexplicable why

more help wasn't sent and however, the cia says the spokesperson categorically denies that requests for backup. nobody in the cia told anybody not to help those in need, claims it's inaccurate. it's hard to know what happened there, you need to be on the ground and say you called for cia chain of command to help you and turned it down. who did you talk to, we need names. >> and said yesterday on the show the buck stops with the president. this thing goes up the chain of command and odd or almost impossible not to enter the white house. charles woods whom steve was talking about, the father of the slain navy seal talking directly to the president in these remarks, listen to this. >> if it was you, your honor, i totally forgive you, but for your benefit, i would want you to turn your life around and head the other direction so that could fill into your

life, i want the best for you, you need to stand up, admit your fault and then change the direction of your life. i love this country of ours. >> clayton: look, it has been six weeks since this happened. to put it in perspective, after september 11th, 2001, four weeks after that we were already bombing afghanistan. >> steve: it's been six weeks. there are tapes that exist of exactly what went down. i believe the people who say that we asked for backup and it never came and it was denied. somebody, look the white house has thrown the intelligence community under the bus and tried the same with the pentagon and i believe those guys. >> clayton: and the bay of pigs, people refer to the bay of pigs invasion, john f. kennedy took responsibility for the botched mess down there, and getting information from his generals taking office, and he went to the podium, i tyke responsible for this. >> steve: do you think it's going to happen after the

leave for an event in florida on tomorrow and come back to the white house to monitor the storm. the white house says the president is getting regular updates on sandy and says the federal emergency management agency, fema, has pre-staged resources to potentially affected states and areas head of the storm and fema remains in close contact with the emergency responders and states up and down the east coast, to ensure there are no unmet needs. governor romney planned to campaign in virginia and he talked with bob mcdonnell and decided at that state emergency personnel need today focus on storm prep and not political events and here is what the governor about the storm. to virginia, new jersey, new york, and along the coast in your minds and in your hearts, you know how tough these hurricanes can be and our hearts go out to them. >> reporter: governor romney will be campaigning in ohio

iowa. and something that the paper hasn't done in 40 years, we'll explain it coming up. >> plus calls for help denied in benghazi and we don't have any answers. >> a former cia operative says the lack of a response is a disgrace, we'll hear from him coming up. "fox & friends" hour two starts right now. ♪ >> all right. good morning, everybody. let's get right to the top story, hurricane sandy is barreling toward the east coast, and 60 million people from connecticut to north carolina, bracing for a direct hit. forecasters warned that this could be the biggest storm the east coast has ever seen. >> and along the east coast right now we've got team coverage, peter doocy live in delaware where evacuations are already underway and we start with elizabeth prann on the

right side of the screen, in north carolina where they're seeing strong winds and rains and we can tell by the shaky camera it's not a pleasant morning. >> it's definitely not a pleasant morning and the conditions deteriorating overnight. wind gusts between 30 and 50 miles per hour and you can see we're getting pummelled by rain and add instult to injury, this is cold, sandy filled rain we're seeing, the conditions now, are going to last between 24 to 48 hours, so, what does that mean for folks here in the outer banks? we all know the outer banks surrounded by water. you have the atlantic ocean on the east and the sound on the west, and that water and that storm surge will continue to come up the next 24 to 48 hours, what are we concerned about? well, we're concerned about obviously beach erosion and then low lying areas, coastal flooding, and all day yesterday, getting their boats inland and removing anything from their lawns, but also a number of people on the barrier islands only accessed

by ferry and there were no mandatory evacuations, so there's a lot of folks, who are in their homes now with no access to get really out of their homes for the next couple of days, so we're really going to see and hear a lot of folks that are getting flooded the next couple of days, but right now we're mostly concerned with these conditions, like i said. they're probably going to stay this way for the next day or two, back to you. >> clayton: thanks, elizabeth prann. >> alisyn: that picture tells the story. >> clayton: and alisyn grunted when she said wet, cold sandy wind. >> alisyn: i remember covering hurricane floyd, intense stuff. >> clayton: let's go to delaware, businesses boarded up as thousands of people are told so evacuate. we're live with pete her doocy in rohobath beach, with more. >> reporter: right now the waves are coming in and crashing and really big and kind of cold here, no rain yet. still though the government, jack markel wants everybody out of areas like this along

the coast and lower lying areas by eight o'clock tonight and saying that eight o'clock should not be the end of an evacuees travel period, it should be-- or rather should not be the beginning of an evacuees travel period, the end. if you're going to go, get out by eight o'clock they're expecting so many people in delaware to evacuate they're going to open up the shelters today at noon and it's all hands on deck with state officials here, since yesterday, including with the vice-president's son, who is the attorney general here, bo biden. listen to this. >> on behalf of ourson bo, the attorney general of delaware and a national guard member, he lit areally drove down, and air force two, about to take off and coming from the residence to the plane and called me, said, dad, the governor just called up the national guard, i'm going ho home. >> when we first got here from

washington to rehoeboth beach. there were families, trick-or-treating and people out and the family festival and the mood was light. by ten o'clock last night, the streets were basically deserted and when we woke up this morning, to see a lot more businesses barreded up and sand bags and you heard rick reichmuth how the cold front will make the storm stranger than normal. we're feeling it, 10 or 15 degrees cooler than last night. back to you in new york. >> steve: all right. peter doocy live in rehoboth, delaware. rick, why haven't we heard anything for the new york city area? >> it's a great question and kind of a problem. peter was just mentioning how the storm is going to transition because of the cold front coming out. it will not be a hurricane when it makes landfall. when i say hurricane, i mean

that in pure meteorology terms it will not be a hurricane, it's going to be more of a nor'easter, because of that the national hurricane center, it falls out of their jurisdiction, so they do not issue hurricane watches and warnings, then it goes to the local national weather service offices to issue high wind watches and warnings. and it is in a sense, a pr mistake, if you think about it, a lot of the media when people hear in and the public hears, hurricane warning coming to you, people take that much more seriously than when they hear a high wind warning. however, for purity in meteorology sense, they're not going to do it, they're going to transfer jurisdiction off to a different department within the national weather service to handle it. so, just because there are not hurricane watches or warnings that are issued across anywhere north of north carolina, that doesn't mean it won't be hurricane conditions. in fact, it will be hurricane conditions and it will be conditions like this area has

probably never experienced in any kind after nor'easter that they'll dealt with, so, that's what we're watching. and significant winds event for everybody, it's not just the coast where it comes in shore and we're going to be dealing with wind anywhere east of the mississippi river is basically going to be having impacts. that means widespread problems for people with power outages and a lot of people potentially not able to go to their homes and stranded with flooding and whatever, and big important impacts to this. i want to bring in now and find out information on how to prepare for this storm, senior vice-president of disaster services with the american red cross, charles, thanks for joining us this morning, i tell you what, with a widespread event here, how does that make are services impacted? it's obviously more important, but must spread you very, very thin. >> rick, thanks for having me. we're active across many, many states, supporting shelters in north carolina. we're mobilizing hundreds of

volunteers from throughout the impacted states and also in the midwest and moving people in, moving our partners in to support feeding operations, and supporting the emergency operations center, but we're not stretched thin in any way, this is what the red cross does, supporting multiple states at one time. we get plenty of practice with stuff like this, whether it's irene a week ago, isaac, months ago and we're mobilizing blood, making sure the blood supply needs to be in the key areas of the country. >> rick: the last minute preparations, there isn't a lot of time left. any last minute thing you can suggest to people that they do? >> the most important thing right now in the last minute if there's little time to get out and make sure you've got the food and water you need in terms of your kit, is to have a battery operated radio, something that can give you the ability to listen to any evacuation orders or any emergency notices that may be going out. >> rick: all right, charles

northern california. >> steve: we told you earlier in the week. last night at 7 p.m. des moines register endorsed every democrat for the last 40 years would announce who they are endorsing for president of the united states. they had talked for one hour with mitt romney, he and the interview from the-- that audio was on their website. and president obama did a half an hour chat with them, but at the end of it he said, boot way that's off the record. they said, come on, mr. president, we'd like to hear what you have to say. that kind of back fired and did later release it. the big story is conventional wisdom to endorse the president, but they've instead endorsed mitt romney. >> clayton: not since 1972, 40 years, unbelievable. here is what they had to say about the decision to pick mitt romney. our discussion repeatedly circled back to the single most important challenge, getting the economy out of the doldrums and more americans and meaningful jobs with promising futures and the

federal government on track to balance the budget in a bipartisan manner which the country demand. which candidate could force the compromises in congress to achieve the goals. when the question is framed in those terms, mitt romney emerges as the stronger candidate and the sentence stuck out for me, the president's best efforts to resuscitate the stumbling economy have fallen short and nothing indicates it would change in a second term. >> steve: because we haven't heard of a plan. >> alisyn: and what steve alluded to is interesting, the back story of what led up to this endorsement is interesting because they say they repeatedly tried to get president obama to come and sit down with them. this is what presidents do, generally come down and sit down with the editorial-- >> on the record. >> alisyn: they tried and tried and said despite the president's visits, 28 times, to their state on the campaign trail, he never could make time for them. >> clayton: is this a slapdown. >> steve: their way of saying,

hey, he later came out and said he would talk to the editorial board and later he called and was talking to the publisher and the editor on the phone saying i'd really love your endorsement, you'll feel better about yourself once you endorsement. >> clayton: he called begging for endorsement and the bad news it's not coming. >> steve: perhaps one of the reasons he didn't want it on the record was the fact that when asked by either the publisher or editor, you know, do you have any regrets about ignoring the economy during the first two years in office when democrats had the super majority. he said absolutely not. i'm exactly happy how things went. >> alisyn: by the way, then the white house did put out all of the transcript you can find at the des moines register site and put it out without comment. >> too late, damage done. >> alisyn: and off the record and then put it on. >> clayton: more on that later in the show and more details on this, disturbing details about the terror attack in benghazi. new report claiming americans on the ground asked for help and got rejected and a former cia operative is here to

>> the benghazi, libya misinformation continues after e-mails so requests and they were told to stand down. >> alisyn: what would the military have done to save those americans from attack. from concerned veterans of america, gary bernstein. >> good morning. >> alisyn: tyrone woods at the cia annex saw what was going on and heard the cries of help coming from the consulate and he asked his superiors in the chain of command, if he could go over and help. who in the chain of command would have said, stand down? don't go over there?

>> well, it's not clear who they spoke to, whether they spoke to some people in ctc, the counterterrorism center or special activities division. they were calling cia headquarters based on reporting that we've seen so far and as you've stated three times they were told to stand down, not do this and thank goodness they did not obey the orders and they went over, they moved from the annex over, relieved and rescued up to 30 people from the consulate, brought them back over to the annex to try to secure them and then of course came under significant attack themselves, sought assistance, requested you know, that forces be sent in, and possibly an ac-130 gun ship, a quick reaction force to help them and they received none of them. the shame in this, there was a tier one team in southern europe that would have been in a position to support serve as qrf and ac-130 gunship would have needed one pass over that embassy or consulate to

suppress that force that was attacking them. this is disgraceful. >> steve: you know what, gary? the back story is, or the most important aspect of this story is that this attack happened just about two months before a big presidential election. and the president and his men and women have been pushing what many of us feel is a big lie, that al-qaeda is on its heels. we saw al-qaeda is not on its heels and so for many, politically, it looks like this was a political calculation, you were in the spy business at the cia. what's it look like to you? >> well, what it does, what happened in benghazi runs against their narrative and their narrative as you stated was al-qaeda was pushed back on its heels. the truth is that those that look at the literal interpretation of the the koran and committed to violent jihad had claimed themselves to be an affiliate of al-qaeda and running rampant across north africa. the loss of control of 15,000

>> the biggest advantage that president obama has, is the fact that he is currently president of the united states. incumbent. only five presidents in the past century lost reelection for a second term. let's take a look and see why they lost their elections and if the president should be worried. right now, joining us from d.c. is presidential historian, nick, good morning to you. >> good morning, steve. >> steve: let's go back to george herbert walker bush, president 41, he lost because? >> he got hit with a poor economy and it's unfortunate, if you look in the fourth quarter of 1992, actually we grew at 4%. if that election had been a few weeks later, he probably would have won. he was at 90% in the polls 18 months before that and then the recession hit, but we started coming out of it, he just was the product of bad fortune, i think, more than anything and clinton was a

good candidate. >> steve: nick, i think you're avoiding the elephant in the room. what about ross perot, a texas businessman who came from nowhere, shot up in the polls and wind up with 19% of the-- >> 19%. >> steve: and eventually from george bush. >> exactly the largest third party candidacy in the 20th century. had perot probably not been in the race, i think that bush would have been reelected and that's kind after historical abberation with bush losing. >> steve: let's talk about jimmy carter, lousy economy and plus the iranian hostages. >> he ran into a bad economy and a bad candidate and ran into a terrific candidate ronald reagan. carter was even or ahead a week out and the final debate between reagan and carter put reagan over the top and turned out to be one of the largest landslides for an incumbent losing in history. >> steve: jerry ford widely liked in washington d.c., but a lot of of people did not like the fact that he pardoned richard nixon. i didn't realize how close it

was until the very end. >> yeah, actually the closest election in the 20th century for a sitting incumbent. had he not pardoned nixon probably would have won and history remembers the pardon a good thing. and ford lost and knew he would lose if he pardoned nixon, he did it anyway. >> steve: herbert hoover is synonymous with the depression in the 30's and trounced by fdr? >> yeah, he stood foe chance, it was the biggest drubbing of the 20th century, i think he won two states and the depression did him in. but his failure to do anything in response to the depression really did him in as wellment. that along with carter with a the two biggest drubbings, in the 20th century. >> steve: it's interesting those who did lose had so much to do with the economy. and on this president's watch, with president barack obama, the economy is sputtering

along. >> if the president is elected it would be a historical anomaly. with an economy this weak, that could be historical for that as well. >> steve: you not only look at history you look at what's going on real time right now. take off your historian hat for a moment and just take a look. what, what, he is et incumbent, but it looks like there's a pretty good possibility that this is going to come down, right down to the wire and he could lose? >> it absolutely will come down to the wire and if you want to compare it to other races, it's probably going to look like carter-ford, the closest incumbent. and it's a couple key state. if romney wins ohio a good chance he wins. if not ohio then wisconsin or one of those, i think it's an election well into the night. >> steve: the challenger got some good news last night at seven o'clock when the des moines register supports, they

[♪...] >> welcome back to "fox & friends" on this sunday morning, a lot of news happening right now. let's get to the top story, which is this, hurricane sandy, barreling to the east coast, 60 million people could be impacted by what could be called the biggest storm ever to hit this region. let's check with rick reichmuth tracking the storm and point out, rick, election day nearing, people going to the polls for early voting and it will affect a lot of people. >> even on election day, we go out seven days from when it happens. we'll talk about power outages, maybe over 10 million across the area and take a

long time to get that many people back online and you know, we had hurricane irene, a lot of people without power for over a week, this will be a much more widespread power outage event than hurricane iran, a the lot of people might not get power by the time we get to election day, something to think about. take a look at where the wind advisories are. steve asked me why they aren't issuing a hurricane watch or warning. >> it will not the be a hurricane when it reaches landfall. all the much bigger impacts than if it were just a hurricane at that point. but it goes out of their jurisdiction and another department issues advisories and where you see the high wind warnings in effect. anywhere you see this dark brown. it's a massive swath of land and goes down across parts of the caroline that, and the appalachians all the way up towards canada and think of it as replacing the hurricane warnings on coast that you would typically be seeing, don't let it be fooled because you haven't heard hurricane warning in your area. i won't show you this too many times and yell at me

afterwards if it's too confusing, but we talk about the models and we want to see them in agreement and i've laid two models here and you see the rings, that's where the pressure gets tighter and tighter and the models in pretty good agreement. exactly what it going to happen. at least the direction of it. go towards the day on monday though and one of the models starts to speed up, and monday 4 p.m. making the landfall somewhere right here in jersey. the other model stays off shore a little bit longer, but comes on shore in the same spot, about eight hours later. so, if that one verifies and spends more time out here, it will strengthen and strengthen and pummel this long island area and connecticut coast line for a much longer time. either way it doesn't matter. everybody's in on that action, and there will be significant damage to the coast of northern jersey, long island, and much of connecticut. and that we will see storm surge all the way across parts of massachusetts even up towards maine and i think we're going to be seeing major coastal flooding and beaches in many cases destroyed and

things might look very differently by the time it's done than now, new cause ways , a long durr ration event. some areas maybe ten plus inches of rain and much of new jersey and pennsylvania, i think, where the bulk of that rain is going to be and towards maryland and delaware i should say. at least 48 hours of wind, guys, so it's a very long event that's going to make the power outages just pile up because it's going to be going on so long. don't be surprised to see winds gust, 75 to 90 miles per hour right here in manhattan. >> alisyn: that's incredible and the skyscrapers and the models weren't confusing, they're just troubling and nerve wracking, thanks, rick. >> clayton: absolutely, figure that tomorrow if you're in that area, whatever you had planned. >> steve: it's not going to happen. >> clayton: a picnic, not going to happen. >> steve: i already got an e-mail from one of my kid's colleges we're taking monday and tuesday off, which is a great idea. >> clayton: and halloween

in the buckeye state or the reverse? joining me now is the ohio state treasurer and u.s. republican senate candidate josh mandell. nice to see you. how are you doing. >> clayton: i'm doing well. conventional wisdom we've been hearing because ohio is doing better that would help president obama. you say-- you disagree with na or agree. >> i disagree, i believe that governor romney is going to win the state. we're doing well in ohio despite the headwinds from washington. as governor cakasich and i like to say, we think that president can learn from we've earned the highest on our bonds and investment and operating budget deficit into a half billion dollar surplus. pundits talking this week that the romney campaign has been trying to get the kasich campaign not talk about the economy so much because it might help president obama.

>> yesterday i was with governor kasich and congressman ryan on the clip you showed, there was a good energy there, i was with congressman ryan and governor romney in canton. we had 10,000 people in a high school ball field in canton and great energy there and i think that governor kasich is doing a great job campaigning with governor romney and i believe a good synergy, imagine what we can unleash in ohio if week get government bureaucrats out of the way. the obama camp says we helped to save the auto industry in ohio and a lot of the jobs saved in ohio are as a result of us, what do you say to that? >> again, i believe we're doing well in ohio despite the headwinds. and one of the reasons we're bucking trends, we have oil and gas, and in the marseles and the utica shale formations and governor kasich and the legislature are opening up lands for drilling which is

essentially creating jobs throughout the state in some of the most depressed counties, despite regulations and despite headwinds from washington. >> clayton: right. you know, it's interesting as you look at the counties and certainly the electoral map and you look at the number of votes needed in certain counties and it looks like pundits have been able to nail down, what, five counties across the entire united states that are incredibly important, i think two or maybe even three of which wind up in ohio, cuyahoga county and franklin and why are they important to the election? >> i can talk personally about that i'm running for the u.s. senate and running a dead race and up in recent polls and talking to you right now from cuyahoga county one of the most populated and democratic and where i was born and raised it's a dog fight dead heat in this portion of the state in northeast, ohio. president obama was at our airport with 10,000 people the

benghazi or tripoli that this attack on september 11th wouldn't have happened? >> the fabric would have been completely different. i'm not trying to brag about this. the number of individuals on the ground could have taken on 150, had you had those additional resources, we're talking about essentially an eight-hour fire fight that could have been mitigated greatly from the beginning if you had better force. these guys, the two over there, talked about the the fact the cia device had to scramble to go over-- >> they were doing on their own. >> violating orders. >> the number you talk about would have made a huge difference in the fire fight. >> clayton: the question, what did they know and when did they know it. three different times they were told to stand down. the individuals to go in. >> right. >> clayton: steve mentioned on the show there was a guy with laser guarded targeting where the mortar attacks was, and they were told not to fire on the mortars. >> a the lot of mystery to the whole thing. what i'll say about this and you open with the phone call pick up and basically that

phone call was answered, they listened to it and put it back down and that's the problem here. everybody in washington knew what was going on. someone made the decision to not render aid. to me, that's the worst thing here. these guys on the ground were lasering something, they thought somebody was coming and again he, there's some breakdown between washington, the folks in europe and italy, who had to launch the force and the guys on the ground. let's be clear for the audience to understand. we have never in our history as a military had better more precise communications real time, plus the drone feed. >> that's exactly right. because they were actually talking on the phone to someone-- or radio. >> right. >> steve: somebody at the department of state and the drone an hour later. hillary clinton would like to be the president of the united states in four years and this suddenly is going to be a gigantic speed bump between her and the white house. you say ultimately somebody made the decision not to send help and you write that it was the president of the united states? >> everything i've heard, according to my sources, is that the president, after the first ten minutes was told,

once call a critical incident report is sent in. the president has to be told within ten minutes and i'm sure he was told. my friends told me after a certain point the president was watching like the rest of his national security team. the only person who can now move troops in a crisis like this accord to go what i was told by my military sources on the inside the is president. a go, no-go call and his decision to make. reagan had to do a similar thing in 1983. >> granada. >> and there was a vote taken by his staff and the vote was six against, three four, one of the of the three for was him and cap weinberger said don't go, intelligence. great uncertainty and reagan said, what i was told. well, gentlemen, i'm glad my vote counts more than yours, we're going. six hours later boots on the

botched benghazi response. >>. we'll hear from the father in a powerful interview, you saw that still picture there. more "fox & friends" starts right now. ♪ >> all right. thank you so much for waking up with us on this busy, busy news sunday morning because hurricane sandy is our top story this morning. look at the pictures coming in, she's shaping up to be a monster, residents already forced to evacuate along parts of the east coast, due to hurricane sandy. >> alisyn: we have live fox team coverage for you. elizabeth prann is on the outer banks of north carolina, she's pummelled there, as bad where peter doocy is, go straight to elizabeth and what

are you seeing. >> sandy is continuing her assault on the outer banks of north carolina, we're getting wind gusts 50 miles per hour and with those gusts comes cold, rain sand, you can see behind me, this time yesterday you could see just about 20 feet of sand, that's now all disappeared. very, very dangerous surf of. between six it eight foot waves and the conditions you're seeing now are going to stay that way for the next 24 to 48 hours and that's-- and outer banks are surrounded not only by the atlantic ocean, but the sound so all of that water has basically nowhere to go and the storm continues to churn. we just got word from authorities that the main thoroughfares mc-12, highway 12 has now been closed. and all those folks that live in the barrier islands south of nagshead beach, they're usually transported by ferry. the ferries have been closed so people are truly waiting out the storm and any type of

day's preparation are now over and we are a certainly in it for the long haul and what's important for you guys to see are these conditions and how terrible they are and we're still 200 miles from the center of the storm, really showing you the impact that you're going to see. >> alisyn: that's a scary forecast, elizabeth prann, thank you to showing that to us. >> steve: now a live report from peter doocy on the delmarva peninsula. peter, it's coming. >> reporter: and the storm is still few hundred miles away from here, look how big the waves are behind me. in the last hour or so, we've been pretty close to high tide and seen some humongous surf. big surf could be bad news for the almost brand new boardwalk refurbished a few years ago, 5 million of surplus money now. and the governor wants everyone in areas like this,

and low lying areas, out. by eight o'clock tonight. if you evacuate, you need to be where you're going. shelters will be open across the state in delaware, noon today about four hours from now start headed to shelters and it's all hands on deck here in delaware, with the state officials and including the vice-president's son who is also the attorney general, bo biden. listen to this. >> on behalf of our son bo, who is the attorney general of delaware and a national guard member, he was literally drove down from wilmington, sitting in air force two, we were about to take off in the car coming from the residence to the plane and he called me, said, dad. the governor just called up the national guard. i'm going home. >> last night when we got in around 7, 6 or seven o'clock around dinner time. hundreds of families, festive move, going business to business, trick-or-treating a lot of little kids in costume by ten o'clock last night much

different story and today, people are coming out and they're seeing the huge waves behind me and they're saying, this is not the storm yet? they're very worried, it's getting very cold here and in a little bit it's going to get very wet. back to you. >> peter have you seen any surfers yet? we know that surfers in crazy weather like this do come out. >> reporter: we've not seen any surfers, the closest thing to anybody coming close, exercising is a guy jogging getting a lot of head headed down the boardwalk with the win at his back, otherwise we haven't seen anybody come further than i am on the beach. you can actually see there's a lot of sea foam already and the water is coming up here, really about 20 feet to the boardwalk, nobody's coming out except folks who come out to take pictures and really surprised and telling us that they're just going home because they don't want to be around, anywhere close to this when the storm comes in. >> alisyn: good idea. yeah, peter doocy, you take cover now and we'll call upon you when we need you.

let's go to rick reichmuth where sandy is. >> rick: take a look, clouds in canada and south carolina part of the storm, the center of the hurricane right out here. this is now the second largest hurricane we've ever had, ever. that's been recorded, second largest. tropical storm force winds extend out. 560 miles, think about that. 560 miles where you have winds in excess of 40 miles per hour and that's why so many people are going to be getting the damage. ran has been continuing here across parts of north carolina and now moved in towards philadelphia and you're going to start seeing rain here today. by this afternoon, up towards new york city, a little later this-- tonight in towards connecticut and then it's going to continue to rain until about the day on wednesday. and that's why this is so concerning. also, this is the wind forecast, all those blues there are at least tropical storm force winds, mostly 50 to 70 mile per hour winds and we have enow a lake shore

flooding watches posted for the state of illinois, in around chicago and that's chicago so far inland, but the models potentially bringing 60 miles per hour winds back towards chicago from the same storm, how far inland and strong it's going to be and potentially at some point going to end up with a big lake effect snow event because the cold air is moving across those lakes. this is the scenario and why we're so concerned for new york stain the beaches around here, if the city of the skorm comes to central jersey, it's going to put the storm surge into new york harbor, a big surge coming down long island sound, has no place to go than the east river and backed up on both sides and that's why, about 10 million people that live in this area, potentially in big, harm's way and the shores of long island, 20 foot waves, guys, on top of an eight foot storm surge, think about that. >> clayton: those arrows pointing directly at steve's house. >> steve: and rick, the thing about the storm surge, more people are killed by the storm

surge than by the wind. >> rick: you said it. it comes on quickly, not like a tsunami that quick, but moves around 10, 15 miles per hour, and all of that water slowly getting pulled up and you see how it's big here, it gets very narrow and all of that water force intoed this area, this area in the north shore of long island, potentially dealing with possibly some of the worst of the storm surge. >> clayton: thanks, rick, rick will continue to track that and that's one of our top stories and we're continuing to track this story out of libya this morning, because still no answers with nine days left before the election on what happened in benghazi over that botched operation there. and last night on judge pirro's show, a poignant interview with the father of one of the slain navy seals during that event and wants to know who was responsible for the murder of my son. who should have been answering the calls to get people in there to help? take a listen. >> i couldn't understand why

did they allow them to die? why didn't they send help? i don't know anything about tactical weapons or anything like that, but i do know that they could have sent something, and i've been told it would have been a c-130 that within 45 minutes could have secured-- >> coming from italy, across the mediterranean. >> wherever, wherever and secured the perimeters and not only protected the lives of those 30 people, but also, the lives of the individuals that were also heroes besides my son, who sacrificed their lives. this was not necessary. i knew this could have happened and my question, in washington d.c., was why didn't this happen jo absolutely, what he was reacting to the news that jennifer griffin our correspondent down in washington broke on friday. which was, when the shots rang out at the ambassador's residents, guys who worked with the cia were about a mile away where the cia was parked,

and they said, we're going to go help those people. three times, they were told by the people who had control of them, no, you're not going. stand down. three times. the people who were at the consulate were simply asking for some air support. send a gunship now. it never ever came and so what he was-- what charles woods was saying, who made the decision not to save my son. >> alisyn: right. >> steve: somebody said, no, no, can't send them in there. they asked three times, denied three times. >> alisyn: and the story gets more and more frustrating and heart breaking for the parents, like charles woods there, because first you'll recall they wanted to know why wasn't there more security on the ground when it was initially asked for before the september 11th attacks when the guys on the ground said the situation here is worsening, the ambassador said the situation is worsening, we know there's been targeted attacks on western targets. so that's the first frustration that he had, where he thinks that his son could have stayed alive had there been more security on the ground and then now to know in

the middle of the gun battle, that for whatever reason, the cia said no, stand down we're not going to send any backup and that's a mystifying decision. >> clayton: and he spoke, charles woods, the father of ty woods, the navy seal killed there, speaking directly to the president because as the president said in that debate. look it, if the responsibility stops with me, because remember the question of him about hillary clinton, and he said no, no, she works for me, it's all on me, so, charles woods last night speaking directly into the camera and right to the president of the united states. >> if it your honor, i totally forgive you, but i-- for your benefit, i would want you to turn your life around and head the other direction so that blessings could continue to flow into your life. i want the best for you and that means you need to stand up, admit your fault and then change the direction of your life. i love this country of ours. >> alisyn: by the way, i just want to say one last thing

sunday. >> steve: thank you so much, just like you do. i'm exhausted already. chris, let's talk a little about this. last week the president of the united states did call up the des moines register and talked for a half hour and at the end of it, by the way, this is off the record and the des moines register pushed back, look, people ought to hear, mr. president what you have to say. and blew up in their face and backtracked and released it and now, as it turns out they're backing the other guy. >> yeah, look, i don't think that's what was the basis for their endorsement. i think they endorsed mitt romney and if you read the editorial it's a very reasoned and thorough explanation of why they think he would be the better president. but you're exactly right. there are two aspects of this which are interesting, one, the des moines register carries real clout in the state of iowa and iowa is one of those razor thin states that is absolutely up for grabs and secondly as you point out the last time that the des moines register endorsed a democrat, a republican, rather, was richard nixon in 1972.

so, this is a big deal for them to endorse mitt romney this time. >> clayton: is it though, going to sway any people's minds, undecided voters i guess specifically, such a slim amount of undecided voters at this point. picking up that editorial page of the des moines register and saying this is it, this is the guy i'm going to vote for now? >> well, it does matter in the fact that the president had a half hour conversation with them on the phone, indicates with the editorial board, indicates he thought it was worth getting. you know, i think there's a limit to any endorsement whether it comes from a newspaper or it comes, clayton, from a politician, but still, you'd rather get it than not get it and particularly for a republican to get it in iowa in a state that's razor thin. look, you switch 5, 10,000 votes, that could be the difference between winning and losing. >> alisyn: chris, i don't have to tell you about the great reporting out of your bureau, courtesy of jennifer griffin for one about what happened there during the the fight in libya in benghazi. she found out that three times

some of the agents at the cia annex asked if they could go help those under the consulate under fire and three times told to stand down and the president was asked this by a reporter at kusa in denver and the president seemed to deflect. he never really answered the question about whether or not there were stand down orders issued. are we going to net any answers, is it possible in the next nine days? >> i think it's unlikely. if the president wanted to answer it, he could have answered a very direct question from that local reporter and i give him credit, the reporter from kusa for asking a tough and direct question to the president. the president didn't want to answer, he doesn't want to get into the details because they're messy and it's not just that that question of, you know, the orders afterwards to-- what you have to think it went up to the president if it went up to the secretary of defense and want the people, you have to assume that the president

>> a shocking brand new report finds that spending on federal welfare programs have soared to over a trillion dollars in the past year, but our next guest says there may be some politics at play here, with the entitlement explosion. >> joining us now, our chief political correspondent from the washington examiner and fox news contributor, byron york. >> good to be here. there was a report that came out and senator jeff sessions and others commissioned it, looking how much the government spends on what are called means tested programs, programs for low income

americans and they found incredible number, about a trillion dollars in fiscal year 2011 and the deal is that that kind of spending on things like food stamps and welfare would have gone up during the the economic down turn as a lot of people lost their jobs and experienced economic hard times, but the fact it went up a lot beyond that. it went up more than warranted by the economic down turn. i think what it shows is there's a really different philosophy of government right now in this race between president obama, who has overseen this, as and mitt romney who criticizes it. >> clayton: let's put up the graphs on the scene and break it down for you at home. some health care, over 60,000 devoted to each household, 280 billion on state constitutions and welfare and rush limbaugh looked into the crystal ball and could be the key to obama's reelection is all of these individuals relines on entitlements, they don't want to lose that. do you see it that way,

politics at play? >> well, here again, i think it's just a fundamental difference in the president's philosophy, he enacted it the moment-- he began enacting it the moment he took office. so it's become very political. i remember, this is kind of the heart of what mitt romney was saying in that those famous or infamous 47% remarks he was talking about the number of americans who did not pay federal income tax and who do receive a lot of benefits from the government. so, i mean, this is become a huge issue. if you listen to romney on the trail he'll talk specifically about food stamps and welfare and look, you don't measure government success by how many people are on food stamps or welfare, you measure success by how many people get off food stamps and welfare. >> steve: that's right, how many people wind up with jobs. and the jaw dropping numbers, when you're talking about billions and trillions, we have no concept because there are so many zeros there, byron. when you hear the headline that it's $60,000 per household of people who are on

government assistance, that is a lot of money. >> i know, i mean, the sort of amateur way of thinking about that, you could just give people, you know, a living wage for that kind of money. >> steve: that's right. >> so is the governor spending money correctly? one thing i will add we've seen an explosion, for example, in food stamps in the obama administration, but that's a program that was really begun under george w. bush who increased it tremendously then. there's kind after bipartisan consensus that is increasing a certain amount of dependency on government. >> steve: and it has to do with the economic circumstances we find ourselves in right now. look at skyrocketing people who are suddenly on disability simply because, many surmise, they've run out of government benefits and only way they can get money back in the kitty. >> well, republicans are worried probably more about the increase in welfare spending i don't know what is warranted by the economic down turn because clearly, with

>> our top story this sunday morning, hurricane sandy, the mega storm could affect as many as 60 million people not just along the coast. several states have already declared states of emergency and thousands of people are getting in their cars and leaving. rick reichmuth tracking sandy's path. rick, as i mentioned as we look at those gigantic pictures, it's not just along the coast, this is going to go in and affect a lot of people. >> rick: lake shore flooding watches in chicago, think how far away from the coast of the storm. >> steve: chicago impacted by a hurricane. >> rick: chicago impacted.

probably wind 60 miles per hour. the latest advisory from the national hurricane center and the wording is interesting and it's worth just repeating here. sandy expect today bring life threatening storm surge flooding to the lid matter of fact coast, including-- to the mid atlantic coast long long island sound and new york harbor, across where the major population zone is and that's why we're talking so much about this. you can see on the satellite imagery though, clouds from the the storm already in canada, and still down in south carolina, and gives you an idea of how big it is. and it's strengthening. the latest advisory showing the pressure down to 951 millibars, generally the equivalent of probably a cat 3 hurricane at least, maybe a cat 4. so, that's the kind of energy that is in this storm. it will not be a hurricane, just because it's transitioning to a different kind of a storm, but the impacts are going to be exactly the same, only larger. it means that the wind won't be right at the center of it, it's going to be spread out across a large area and that

means the rain isn't just the center it's a large area, one impact that will be the same as a hurricane, is the storm surge and it's happening where this makes landfall to the right of it and that puts that right there, new york harbor, long island sound, the shores of long island to the bay and see it up across new england. guys. >> rick reporting for us, saying the second largest hurricane in recorded history, so-- >> and this is going to and there are a lot of states with early voting and you know, it's going to impact us for a couple of days and impact early voting and he said that it could actually-- rick you said it could actually impact the day of the election next tuesday, right? >> there's probably going to be millions of people, i wouldn't be surprised over 10 million people without powerment to get that many people back online takes a very long time, i'm certain there will be people without power next tuesday. >> alisyn: that's right. for a lot-- in a lot of there are going to be shelters and could be the same places where people are supposed to go on election day to vote and might be cots in

this last week, bill collar of the new york times wrote an article how to die, it was all about end of life care. the suggestions he made was that the reason we're not able to, as a society, get to a point in which our loved ones can die peacefully is because the catholic church would never allow such practices to occur. meaning what? a suggestion that the catholic church would require a family member to go to extreme means to keep somebody who is dying alive. it's simply not the truth. but, nobody stands up to it because you know what? as long as you're talking about religion, as long as you can offer any opinion you want and pass it as fact because religion itself is purely subjective. >> clayton: what about during the vice-presidential debate and joe biden flat out lied and says that catholic institutions don't have to pay

for contraceptives, and that's a lie or it was barely picked up. >> that's the media's responsibility to go after those facts, but again, because either the woefully ignorance in the area of religion and therefore, hey, i don't know if it's true or not. well, because there's a bias they're not doing it. another example i say there'ses two ways to present bias. one presented your opinion on fact, or fact because it's subjective. or taking a fringe representative. for instance, like catholics for free choice. >> steve: what, catholics for abortion? >> the problem is by using the name catholic, you're suggesting that this group represents a legitimate group within the catholic church. the president of that group for 25 years was one who celebrated roe vs wade the first anniversary standing on

60 miles an hour and with that comes sand and cold rain. we're more than 100 miles away from the center of the storm, showing how bad conditions will get, especially if you're close to the eye. i want to show you yesterday we used to see 30 feet of beach. now with high tide, the angry surf is coming up closer to the sand dunes. these sand dunes are what people have to protect themself here in the low-lying areas. we know these conditions will continue so water could overtop the dunes and flood many of these homes. the outer banks are surrounded by water. on the east, the atlantic ocean, on the west, the sound, so we'll get it from both sides. >> thank you, elizabeth. >> it's getting worse every hour. >> live to peter doocy in are a

going to win. >> let's talk about the other big question, of course what's going on with libya and the unanswered questions we have got gotten from the president, nine days left until election day. jennifer griffin and others in washington report that the individuals at the benghazi consulate were told to stand down on three different occasions and to go in and rescue those individuals when president obama was asked about that, wouldn't answer those questions. asked three different times in the media and wouldn't answer. is that going to hurt him come election day or are voters tuned out? >> i think it's negative for him. in two respects. first of all, everybody gets why he doesn't want to answer, because for two weeks he pretended this was not a terrorist attack but a

spontaneous demonstration about a movie. his goal was obviously to tell everyone i took care of al-qaeda when i killed bin laden and now it's not true. libya and sandy both are working together. the libyan issue blocks out other issues in the election. everybody's talking about libya and it's really the question is unanswered and looms over the race. sandy, the storm, is blocking coverage. everybody's covering the stomp when you're behind in a presidential race you don't want anyone blocking coverage. i want to say, clayton, we're all very concerned about the families of those men who were killed in benghazi. one of them is the woods family, ty woods, who leaves a widow and son. i've been taking up a collection

the latest gdp report shows our economy grew 2% and the unemployment rate is 7.8 approximates. >> est been four years since the crisis began on wall street spread to main street, hammering middle class families and costing our economy 9 million jobs. we've fought 0 our way back. our businesses added more than 5 million new jobs. unemployment rate has fallen to the lowest level since i took office. home values are rising and assembly lines are humming. >> is this the economic recovery president obama promised? we're back with dick morris. look at the latest numbers, 7.8%. that's right back where we

started, square one. how do you think voters will respond to that message? >> i think it's ridiculous and voters understand that they have a choice between listening to what obama says or what their own eyes reveal. the -- i keep thinking 23 million unemployed, 47 million on food stamps, a 2% growth rate is not enough to sustain the population increase for employment. it certainly isn't enough to lower the rate. the only reason the rate is the lowest in his administration is the labor force is the smallest since he took office. so they're not expanding the numerator, they're shrinking the denominator so the result is that the rate comes down because people have given up looking for work. when obama took office there was 70 million working age americans not in the labor force, now there are 100 million working

age americans not in the labor force. >> the gdp number, though higher than some analyst predicted, which can be spun in a positive way, much of what allowed for that was federal spending but are these the details americans are diving into or just noting the headline number. >> what's going on is under decided voters, those leaning one way or the other on the fence, are basically saying i do not want four more years of this. at the end an election boils down to a simple computation as to whether you want this to continue or not. i think that the tipping is going to romney. he's picking up tremendous momentum and i expect as i have expected for a year, a landslide victory for romney. not a close one. >> in the op-ed pages of the

"wall street journal," so right now we've got growth at less than 2%. to put it in perspective they write in the third quarter of 992 growth came in at 4.2% and democrats called it a catastrophe. here we are with a growth rate i think about 1.7 on average. we spent $5 trillion to get us there? >> yeah. well, the 5 trillion didn't get us there, it kept us there. because the idea is that this level of borrowing did more harm than the spending it paid for did good. while the spending injected money into the economy, the debt scared everybody so that nobody was willing to spend it. >> what about the argument from the left that this president saved us from a great depression? >> well, it's ridiculous. he didn't. the thing that saved us from a

great depression was the tarp spending. this massive infusion of one time capital that made the banks increase their swagger and nobody took them on and the banks survived then paid it back and we were gone. tarp money was voted under the bush administration. what obama did was when he took office, he said i have this huge recession. i'm going to spend massive amounts of money to get tows recover. it would have worked except he had to borrow the money. he sent the national debt and global debt skyrocketing and that led to a climate of fear and terror. so all the cash he put into our hands, we used to pay down our credit card balances and loan balances and banks wouldn't lend and companies wouldn't invest and borrow. >> the crazy thing about that is the fact technically the recession had ended before the stimulus money started going into there, so draw your

our top story, hurricane sandy could bring life-threatening storm surge to

the mid-atlantic coast. >> it's huge. when you look at the cloud cover from canada to south carolina, it's a monster storm. it is the second largest storm as far as a wind field that we've ever had. tropical storm force winds over 560 miles from around parts of maine to the mid-atlantic. that kind of a swath with that strong of wind. it's strengthening. the central pressing has fallen so it's a rapid intensification. all this is bad news. reason continues across the outer banks, a significant rain band towards jersey, pennsylvania and we're 36 hours away from the main event and already have the rain. the two computer models, people are asking on twitter saying any chance this isn't going to happen. people think weather can do anything. it can't, it is going to do this. these are two models where you have the lines, where the lines

of equal pressure, the tighter they are together, the stronger the wind, go out until tonight. the center of these storms, going forward, one gets faster than the other and makes landfall tomorrow around 5:00 p.m. on the central jersey coast. the next one sits out there and strengthens and makes landfall in the same spot around seven or eight hours later. either way it brings a landfall across the central jersey coast. if you're onto the right side of that, we'll see major storm surge flooding across long island sound, the south shore of long island, northern shores of jersey as well as towards new york harbor and manhattan. major problems there. wind is going to be extreme. because this is a transition from a typical hurricane into a new nor'easter, the national

hurricane center will top issuing advisories after the transition. new york and philadelphia will typically have hurricane warnings. because they're not seeing that, don't think you'll get the impact. the high winds go inland. there's a snowy element to this. it's going to be major. parts of the central appalachians, some spots seeing 4 to 5 feet of snow. >> thank you. we'll have more on that. nine days before the election, sandy shaking up the presidential election with both president obama and mitt romney canceling events. >> molly henneberg joins us live from d.c. with the latest details. tell us what's happening. >> good morning, some are calling hurricane sandy the october surprise and this year's presidential election and candidates are trying to work around the storm while keeping up the campaign pace in key

these are more important to me. i look at this president, it's all about him. i wrote an op-ed piece. in one of the speeches i gave, he said i or me 117 times. michelle obama in her speech in charlotte in 20 minutes used the word i or me 83 times. it's all about them. it's not about us. with ronald reagan it was about we. about us, working together. towards a goal. with them, it's i and me. when it's i and me you get nothing accomplished internationally or the united states of america. that's his problem. he needs to go. >> and the problem for our current president is when this hit the fan, back then he couldn't talk about the economy so he talked about his great dealings with international affairs and stuff like that. i killed bin laden. but as it turns out, al-qaeda is still out there. michael, thank you so much. >> alive and well. >> thank you so much from

i have to tell you, i have worked with a bunch of people who went to your school and it's a great meteorologist program. for you to have this experience, it has to be exciting. alex, you're the one one of the group. what are your first thoughts? >> i was really excited to hear about this storm. in our class at plymouth state we've been talking about this through the week, all of us, sophomore meteorologist majors and dr. hoffman had a weather seminar that he invited all students to come and attend and it was a dynamic situation where we learned a lot about this storm. it's relatively new for us to learn this. >> vanessa, you've looked at the historical significance of some so that we did do you see in sandy that you may have seen in other storms?

>> the fact it's undergoing a extra tropical transition and interacting with a strong jet core is something we've seen in other hurricane instances and it's one of the many factors that makes it significant. >> i love the way you speak, your language is good. >> over my head, by the way. >> william, you're a graduate student, you are also the brother of our reporter, molly henneberg. as a graduate student what do you think is going to happen with this storm? >> well, i think the models are starting to hone in and it looks like landfall will occur on the jersey coast, probably early on tuesday. it's already dropped to about the central pressure was 951 millibars so it's intensifying. strong sturgiss from landfall, especially north, along the jersey coast, new york, long
